Thank you very much Joy for an awesome interview with Olivia Newton-John. You girls rock!

susan cassidy   November 19th, 2009 1:33 am ET

The observation made on the Joy Behar Show that women's health issues are being short changed is true.

Medicare discriminates against women who lose their breast from breast cancer. Medicare provides coverage for a custom made prostheses for every body part, EXCEPT BREAST. They do however pay for penis pumps. Please consider a show dealing with this inequity. Thank you.

What was that drink that Olivia Newton-John's husband gave to Joy. What does it suppose to be good for. It's suppose to be from Puru.

Jeff Roush   November 19th, 2009 8:56 am ET

I never would have guessed that I would be expressing an opinion on this but the CDC is being negligent in making this policy statement..who is benefitting from this? There are many women diagnosed who are in their 40's and even earlier. My wife had no family history or even symptoms. If she had not had a routine mammogram which led to a more thorough MRI she would not be around now, and the lives of my two young sons would have been forever altered. How ludicrous to compare the stress of a false positive to a premature death of a young mother, which the vast majority of these young women would be. Whoever decided to make this policy shift should lose their job.

Great segment. If anything, women with the history should take even more concern, not less.

Chris   November 19th, 2009 1:33 pm ET

How do we keep hiring these intelligent idiots into office? I think there's a little evil going on. Why would anyone encourage a doctor to not encourage their patients to self exam? It's not only ridiculous, it's questionable. What is their real agenda? Why would America be bending over forward, so willingly, for the European Union? We don't need their socialized style medicine. It's time for people to wake up. This is not a Democrat thing or a Republican thing. It's a We The People thing, and all women should have the right and the access to all medical treatments, and good doctor advice, without the government or some intelligent evil idiot's input. Without people like Olivia, this world would surely fall apart at the seams. If she ran for office, then we could surely say that we have at least one good and decent person in there.

Doug   November 19th, 2009 10:37 pm ET

After spending millions on informing and teaching women the importance of early detection, now the government is saying don't worry about it. Wait 10 years. Why? Because if universal health care gets passed then those yearly mammograms are going to be expensive as hell.
Another reason government should not be making health care decisions for people. They will consider costs over care.
Why should we trust them anyway. It's always about the bottom-line.
They'll give billions to foriegn countries and let you get cancer.

Mukund Setlur   November 19th, 2009 10:51 pm ET

Joy Behar is truly a JOY & a breath of fresh air, very good decision. Thank You.

Martin - Los Angeles   November 20th, 2009 1:02 am ET

Love, Love, Love Olivia Newton-John. She still looks amazing. I will run out and buy her Christmas CD today.

JWL   November 20th, 2009 9:18 am ET

Well we all know the yanks make some crazy decisions, but this one well...........!A lot can happen in 10 years, for these medical morons to suggest no mammagrams for the under 50's unless a family history is just ludicrous. You could be dead in that time!Fortunately many agree with Olivia that these latest suggestions are just plain stupid!Onya Livvy for speaking out about this insanity.I guess if america will send thousands of innocent men and women off to war needlessly, why would the care if women lose thier cancer battles.American logic leaves a lot to be desired!

Cheryl Ketcham   November 20th, 2009 4:41 pm ET

How do you like YOUR presidents new healthcare cost cuts now you liberal idiot ????????

Lynette Furner   November 20th, 2009 5:14 pm ET

I happened to see the show that Joy Behar did on Wednesday November 18 with Olivia Netwon-John and the Dr. Marie Savard. They talked about the new breast cancer screening guidelines that just came out on Monday. They were talking about many different aspects about the guidelines and the statement was made that all the states pay for yearly mammograms except Utah. That is just untrue. Ms. Behar also under her breath made a snide remark "Don't Mormons get breast cancer?" Let me answer her question. I am a Mormon from Utah and just 3 weeks ago my mother who is also a Mormon and also from Utah was diagnosed with breast cancer. So to answer her insensitive remark ,yes Mormons do get breast cancer. Breast cancer and breast cancer screenings are an important and sensitive topic. One that should be handles with care and compassion. Being rude to any group of people is unprofessional and has no place in a discussion as serious as breast cancer. There was no need for the insensitive remark made by Ms. Behar . Utah does pay for annual mammograms. My mother is 70 years old and is on medicare. She gets a mammogram one year and one day from her last mammogram, and medicare pays for it. But I am sure that this fact was over looked in order to make a wise crack at just how backwards we "Mormons women " in Utah must be. Now is a time, more than ever that we as women need to make our voices heard in this health care debate. Now is not the time for women to cut down other women regardless of race, religion, or age. Our health care is important and we don't need to be insensitive to each other. This kind of behavior takes us off point and changes the dialogue. Ms. Behar and CNN needs to apologize to all Mormon and non Mormon women from Utah who are fighting breast cancer. Ms. Behar's remark was rude and unprofessional she should be ashamed for her offhanded remark. It is up to CNN to call her on the carpet and demand better of her.

May be Martha Stewart should go on Iron Chef America, Racheal Ray did an exceptional job. When have we seen Martha on Iron Chef or doing all the cooking her self? We have always seen Martha with her team assisting, maybe its time for Martha to step up and do it herself. If she still has the ability to do so.

I am so glad this was on tonight. I am a radiation therapist and the thought of women not getting mammograms until 50 makes me cringe. I cannot tell you how many women I have treated in their 30's and early 30's at that! It has been such a struggle to promote early detection so lives can be saved and changed and this new "guideline" goes against all of that! So ladies please continue to keep yourself safe and practice early detection and prevention.

Peggy Stevens   November 20th, 2009 10:47 pm ET

Yes, no mammograms before age 50 is ludicrous but what's even more so is that you shouldn't examine your breast is totally ridiculous, downright crazy!! My daughter was diagnosed at the age of 32 with breast cancer and died at the age of 35. She was already at stage four with a very aggressive type of breast cancer. When she requested from her health insurance to be treated by Cancer Treatment Centers of America, she was denied because it was out of network. Her motto was "Feel your boobs, save your life." I pray that all you women will ignore these guidelines and do just that! There really isn't any incentive to cure cancer anyway. It's really big business! So, please be proactive...keep feeling those boobs!!!

Debbie   November 20th, 2009 10:58 pm ET

If this were men having their private parts removed they would want to start screenings at birth! I can't believe that after years of teaching women to do self exams and finally with better mammograms now they say wait!! I won't wait and I'll donate more to those who can't afford testing!

vicki spatz   November 20th, 2009 11:13 pm ET

mammo's are so important! I have beniegn breast syndrome. But don't forget I was diagosed with microcalcifacations. this is something you cannot feel! all the more reason for mammo's' i was 49 last year when it happened. surgery followed by chemo, radiation, herceptin infusion every 3 weeks for a year! as of nov. 16,2009 was my last infusion! yeah! nov. 27,2009 my port will be removed. if mammo's were not avaliable i would not be alive. My cancer was only stage 1 but grade 3-the most aggressive so if it wasn't caught sooner I may have not survied. i certainly have alot to be greatful for this Thanksgiving!

Everytime I hear that women need to wait until they're 40 or 50 to have a mammogram I feel that I need to tell someone that they are wrong.
I found a lump in my breast when I was 30 years old ( 1968 ).At that time breast cancer was considered an older women's problem. I had a radical mastectomy at that time.
Women cannot wait to see if there mothers or grandmothers have cancer before they need to be checked. My Mother didn't have breast cancer until she was 69 years old ( 1988 ) and my Grandmother was in her 80's. If I wouldn't have been checking myself and having a mammogram I would have died 20 years before my Mother discovered her cancer.
When I went to the cancer doctor with my Mother he explained that
( he called them junk gene's ) as these gene's are passed down through generations people are getting things like cancer earlier and earlier. Because of this many womem will get breast cancer before the older women in their family. Women can not afford to wait till they're 40 ro 50 or their Mother gets cancer to be checked.

Jodie   November 21st, 2009 3:12 pm ET

Joy,
Why after all this time in American do we Women still have to fight to be Seen, Protected and Take care of ourselves
I found a lump no family history at 36 years old! Yup Cancer! And Im alive 18 years. We gals are going to have to stick together on this one Again!!!

"Self Exam, Get your Mamogram" Early dection is the Best prevention!

Do they really think were that stupid!

Just a thought Jodie

Christine   November 21st, 2009 10:10 pm ET

Women should ask their GYN doctor about the HALO breast test. It takes 5 mins in the doctor's office. It collects cells from the nipple and they are sent to a lab. This test is said to detect abnormal cells up to 8 years before a mammogram will show a lump. Insurance didn't cover it, I paid $150 and worth the peace of mind.

I was diagnosed through my annual screening digital mammogram at age 45. My tumor was invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC), .9 centimeters, and it had not spread to my lymph nodes. This is very early detection for this type of cancer – lobular cancer is hard to detect and is often described as sneaky. It is known for being very large at time of detection. I consider myself fortunate to have been diagnosed by the screening mammogram. I had no absolutely no symptoms – neither I nor any of the several doctors I consulted could feel a lump. Based on my stats, cancermath.net puts my chance of dying from cancer in 15 years at 4%.

If I were to follow the new guidelines, it would be five years until my first screening – with a lobular cancer growing for all five of those years. Lobular cancer doesn't usually form an easily detectable lump – how large would my tumor have been if it were detected five years late? 5 centimeters is the average size at which an ILC tumor can be felt, and they are then likely to have more than three lymph nodes that the cancer has spread to. If I change my stats to 5 cm ILC, with 4 positive lymph nodes, cancermath.net shows that my chances of dying from cancer in 15 years jump to 42%! More than 4 times as likely to die from invasive lobular cancer at the average stage of detection, vs at my early stage. 4% vs 42% – I'm so thankful for my screening mammogram. For so many of us in whom screening works, it saves our lives.

I was also able to have breast conserving surgery and avoid chemotherapy because of my early stage small tumor. This would not be the case if my detection had been at average stage. I most likely would face bilateral mastectomy and grueling chemotherapy. I would also have undergone extensive lymph node removal because of the positive nodes, greatly increasing my chances of debilitating arm lymphedema. I'm so thankful to have been spared those agressive treatments. Screening not only saves lives, it saves quality of life.

I am a 4year Breast Cancer Survivor, I just want to say congrats to all Iam 35 now was 31 whan it happened, it's hard but I got through it with the help of my family and friends, just want to say keep praying I did.

Dr. W. David Berglund   November 21st, 2009 10:47 pm ET

Hi Joy: You are the best. Oliva is the best. She knew something was wrong. Breast X-rays are not a very good screening when it comes to breast cancer.Mammograms are not diagnostic before age 50. Women should seek much better screening tests, than smashing your mammary glands between two plates...http://mybreastcancerstory.blogspot.com/2007/05/american-college-of-physicians-warns.html

Love ya,

Ms Newton-John's longtime boyfriend disappeared more than 4 years ago. This was a huge scandal at the time. Ms Newton-John tried to find him but he all but vanished.

He's since been found and is living on a boat in South America. Joy should do her homework, so she doesn't ask questions like, "Were you dating your present husband for 17 years.

Marta   November 21st, 2009 11:15 pm ET

During this program Joy said that it seems like there is a "war against women in health care." Her comment focused on medical treatment for women and the current health care bill. I agree with Joy, and I feel that the war does not stop there. The Health Care War is a war attacking from two directions; it is against women as both recipients and as providers of medical care!

The salaries for positions in the medical field are high. Because the number of women doctors is approximately 25%, the vast majority of nurses are women, and about half of the medical technician positions are filled by women (not mentioning the vast number of clerical positions), I would venture to say that the majority of positions in the high paying medical field are filled by women. It is this high paying, woman dominated field that is being considered for governmental control.

KARIN O'DONNELL   November 22nd, 2009 12:04 am ET

HI JOY,
I ADMIRE YOUR HONESTY.
I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT THE RECENT WOMENS HEALTH CARE RECCOMENDATIONS, AS IT RELATES TO NEW STANDARDS E.G., MAMMOGRAMS AND PAP SMEARS.
I FIND IT REPREHENSIBLE.
MY QUESTION IS , IS IT TRUE THAT THE COMMITTEE COMMISSIONED TO MAKE THIS KIND OF BLANKET POLICY WAS PUT IN PLACE BY THE PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATION. IT SEEMS TO ME TO BE, ANOTHER SET UP TO DEFEAT THE HEALTH CARE INITIATIVE. WHAT THE ---–!!!!!!!

Meggie   November 22nd, 2009 1:20 am ET

People need to use common sense and not be afraid to question if even second guess your doctors.

On a different topic, I cannot believe that Joy had no clue that Olivia Newton John had a very successful singing career for many years prior to Grease!!!

Ross   November 22nd, 2009 6:05 am ET

Olivia is a great Australian! And we all love her very much down under in Aussie. Keep going Olivia! You rock.

Robertangelo Coppola   November 22nd, 2009 5:00 pm ET

Men and Women are always at risk for Breast Cancer, Screw the advise get checked out early and often. Better to be safe than sorry....I believe in better health care not less health care...And of course always always do self exams...Know your own body .....

dabneytaggert   November 23rd, 2009 11:55 am ET

karin o'donnell-Ah yes, Bush did it!! Why is it so hard for you libs to take responsibility for anything?? Cite your source for your allegation. From what has come out, the panel is made up of a bunch of money crunchers who look at studies and compile the results to come up with the first step in rationing. Now, that sounds like something YOU guy is into, doesn't it?? Wonder if the proud michelle has mammograms, does self exam AND gets a yearly pap test.
BTW-what is being proposed by this administration is anything but an initiative.

dabneytaggert   November 23rd, 2009 12:05 pm ET

karin o'donnell-in reference to your post, I did some research and found that the US Preventive Task Force was formed in 1984 (so blame Reagan, you people need a DEMON)and has been active since then. Members of the Task Force ARE appointed by the sitting president and report to the Dept of Health & Human Services. And yes, the members on THIS particular sitting panel were appointed by Bush. This was the panel that made the original recs for mammograms starting at age 40 but have changed their tune. HMMM,look who they report to??!! And do tell, how would this recommendation defeat the debacle being presented??
Also, my bad, there are MD's on the panel but none are oncologists.
ROSS-so you're an Aussie!! Interesting.

Olivia Is the best! Keep it up! What didn't Joy understand about how Olivia could have known her husband for 17 years. Many people know each other and hook up later in life.
